I have already written about one artist who is working within the medium of GIFs and as I find myself becoming more interested in the work of individual gif-artists, I am realizing that the form already has its icons. Among them is Davidope (also, dvdp), the nom de gif of David Szakaly who has been making entrancing looping gifs and offering them up to the tumblr-sphere since 2008. In a 2012 interview with Societé Perrier the Budapest, Hungary-based artist explained his attraction to the form, “Everything has it’s end, but a looped linear animation has no beginning and no end — it is infinite. Like a fire, a fountain or a waterfall, it’s endless, repeating patterns and motion can make me forget get about time for a while.” [It’s easy for me to appreciate this sentiment as the very name of this blog came from my penchant to get lost “through the wormhole” of whatever fascinated me online, forgetting about time for far too long on sites like youtube and wikipedia.] Whether you see these moving images and immediately think of updated lava lamps or they send you into a meditation on the nature of existence, I believe that the Internet is a more wondrous place with the work of Davidope in it.
