A couple of years ago, prompted by a friend of mine, I read Mariko and Jillian Tamaki’s Skim. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when it was put into my hands and ended up being absolutely blown away. While the story of an outsider is nothing new to the comic/graphic novel form, the cousins Tamaki created a full-on hero out of their 16-year-old outcast. While I plan on writing a longer review of the book itself at some point in the near future, I came across illustrator Jillian’s website today and decided to pull a few to post on here. Her line-work is so graceful, precise, and lively, and she chooses perfect colors for her subject manner. Keep your eyes out for her work, wherever it might show up. She is making the world a more beautiful place, one drawing at a time.
